In Richard Hofstadter’s book The Progressive Historians he writes of the American historian Charles A Beard:

“His essential grievance was not against class, nor even the property system as such, but against the waste of energies entailed by modern competitive organization.” pp175

This is Hofstadter’s comment of Beard’s 1901 book The Industrial Revolution. Nothing changes? That’s my biggest bugbear recognising “wasted energies” and  I believe what is meant here is wasted emotional energy.
