In the Art of Germany Andrew Graham-Dickson introduced to the work of Tilman Riemenschneider. I was especially struck by his explanation of the Holy Blood Altar carving with Judas centre stage.  AGD showed how an individual entering the church found themselves looking over the shoulder of Judas towards Jesus Christ.  What a powerful image.

Without being crass it is perhaps the same psychological dynamic that Zizek discusses around gonzo pornography in Living in the End Times See also Gonzo-journalism.
